Education changes everything.
You are part of a small and select group of people that are empowering Sophors through education. Sophors knows that through the kindness of people far away, like you, she is able to fulfill her ambitions. She wanted to share her story with you.
I had to get up at 3am every morning to catch fish to sell in the market.
I also sold the rice which dropped on the road from trucks.
I used this money to support my family. I wanted to go to school like other children but I needed to earn money to support my family. I wanted to learn English but I did not have the money to do so.
Now that I live in Mekhala House I go to school everyday.
I have learned now to speak English and use the computer. I am very happy to live here.
I feel like I am living in heaven.
I would like to go to university to study marketing. I want to help create business in Cambodia so more people have jobs.”
Sophors has worked extremely hard to become one of the top students her her class. Only a few years ago she was selling rice that fell out of trucks. Her transformation is due to her hard work and determination, but you were able to empower her to put that hard work in.
We asked her a few more questions:
What do you want to be when you grow up?
When I grow up I would like to be a marketing manager because I am good at communicating and sweet talking people!
What do you like doing in your free time?
In my free time I like reading Khmer or Korean novel, listening to music or using internet.
What is your favourite food?
I like the food that was dried or fried such as fried fish or dried fish or chicken. It is very delicious if we eat it with soy sauce or fish sauce with chilli.
