April 2022 News
Message from our Chair
2022 is well underway and CKC has much to celebrate, despite the difficulties the world is facing. On 8 March, International Women’s Day was celebrated across the globe with the theme ‘Break the Bias’. At CKC, we try to break gender bias every day. It forms part of our core purpose and we’re so pleased to share news below about our students in Cambodia.
Locally, the Board has been revising various policies- a task which needs to be carried out regularly to keep them up-to-date and relevant to our organisational needs. We recently spent a wonderful strategic planning session with facilitator Cynthia Mahoney – and will use her input to revisit and reinvigorate our strategic plan.
We realise that times are difficult for many people and that many charities are struggling - we are so grateful to all our supporters for helping us to continue our work.
Congratulations to our graduates!
Four girls from Mekhala House successfully passed year 12 in 2021.
All four girls have secured scholarships to universities and have commenced study. Ousa and Chinn have enrolled at National University of Management with majors in marketing. Nak and Sreyrom were accepted into National Institute of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (NIEI).
We’re so proud of everything these young women have accomplished. Our students had a 100% pass rate compared to the Cambodian average of 65%, demonstrating Mekhala House’s ongoing success.
CKC supports university students by funding their living expenses. With 13 aspiring young women currently at university, we’re seeking sponsors! Please get in touch if you can help give these women a life-changing opportunity to pursue a tertiary education.
From Mekhala House to software company internship
In our last newsletter, we introduced Sreyhon- a Mekhala House graduate who was soon completing a two year Information Technology training at Passerelle Numerique Cambodia (PNC). We’re thrilled to announce that she’s now graduated and has begun a 3-month internship with a business software company in Phnom Penh.
As Sreyhon’s internship ends, she will have gained valuable working experience and be one step closer to finding full time professional employment. Well done, Sreyhon!
Thanks to your support, CKC gives young Cambodian women in Cambodia the opportunity to pursue an education in STEM and other fields.
International Women’s Day - Breaking the bias
On Tuesday 8 March, we celebrated International Women’s Day.
Imagine a world without barriers; a gender equal world. A world where girls receive the same education as boys. A world that is diverse, equitable and inclusive. Unfortunately, inequality in access to education and pay inequality still exists in many parts of the world, including Cambodia.
Cambodian Kids Can works to narrow this gap in Cambodia through encouraging young women to stay in school through its Mekhala House and university sponsorship programs. We provide personal development programs and career guidance at Mekhala House to help our students realise the career possibilities that are open to them.
Your support has enabled 13 young women to complete tertiary studies and find employment in their chosen careers. Former students have gone on to work in skilled professions such as accounting, law, midwifery, sales and marketing.
Together, we can all break the bias.
Make your pledge today and help us break the bias by empowering girls through education.
